Afghan troops, Coalition forces kill several militants

Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and the U.S.-led Coalition forces on Wednesday killed several militants during a patrol in southern Afghan province of Helmand, said Coalition statements released here on Thursday.

A large weapons cache in the northwestern Jowzjan province was also confiscated by the joint troops in the operation, the Coalition said.

The combined forces on patrol in Nahr Surkh district of Helmandengaged with militants from a fortified position with small-arms fire and RPGs (Rocket propelled grenade), the statement said.

The patrol responded with small-arms fire and called for fire support killing several militants and destroying a militants' fighting position, it added.

Meanwhile, ANSF and Coalition forces acting on information provided by local residents removed and destroyed the munitions from a compound in She Shanben village of Jowzjan province.

More than 1,000 mortar rounds, 60 anti-aircraft rounds and several tons of small-arms ammunition and weapons were confiscated ,it said.

A total of 70,000 multi-national troops are deployed across Afghanistan under the flags of the NATO-led ISAF and the U.S.-led Coalition forces respectively for maintaining stability and helping in reconstruction.

Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people with over 700 civilians in the war-torn country so far this year.
