OTTAWA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) on Friday added 50 more food products to a recall list after tainted meat products led to a nationwide listeria outbreak.
The newly recalled products, including hospitality and party trays, submarine sandwiches, wraps and roasted turkey breast, were produced by different companies and sold throughout the country.
On Thursday, the number of confirmed deaths in Canada being blamed on a nationwide outbreak of listeriosis jumped from five to eight.
Mark Razienne of the Public Health Agency of Canada, speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, said all three of the latest victims are from Ontario, and had previously been on a list of deaths under investigation.
According to the agency there are 29 confirmed cases of the outbreak strain in the country and 36 cases under investigation.
The CFIA has determined that the outbreak originated from contaminated meat products from the Toronto branch of Maple Leaf Foods, Canada's biggest food company. The company has closed down its Toronto facility and recalled 220 product varieties.
