BRUSSELS, July 17 (Xinhua) -- A breakthrough in the long-stalled Doha Round of global trade talks may be achieved when ministers from major trading countries meet next week in Geneva, the European Union (EU) trade chief said Thursday.
"It is going to be tough but I really do believe it is doable, "EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson told reporters, referring to the ministerial meeting of about 30 members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) starting Monday.
The meeting has been billed as the last chance to conclude the Doha Round within this year.
"I am more encouraged than a week ago," Mandelson said when asked about the chances of success.
"But I really do not underestimate the complexity of the negotiations, the vast range of economies in the WTO that are party to the negotiations and the myriad of cross issues still to be negotiated in the coming week," he added.
