According to OLAF report, which were sent to Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Plugchieva two weeks ago, businessman Lyudmil Stoykov, who sponsored the president's election campaign, and his associate Mario Nikolov, who is a sponsor of Parvanov's Bulgarian Socialist Party, were involved in large-scale abuses of EU funds.
Several Bulgarian rightist opposition parties said on Wednesday Parvanov should resign if the information of the OLAF Report was confirmed.
The Sofia Mayor and leader of the strongest opposition party GERB Boyko Borisov said the OLAF report had provided evidence for the absence of Bulgaria's government, and the governing parties wanted to use these special institutions for their political purposes.
On Thursday, the leaders of Bulgaria's opposition parties left in protest the meeting of the Consultative National Security Council chaired by the president only 30 minutes after its beginning, because Parvanov refused to start the meeting with a discussion on the OLAF Report.
However, Parvanov later in the meeting rejected any accusations of providing "political umbrellas" to businessmen and underworld figures.
"No state institution can and would not be creating a cover-up for no one," Parvanov said.
According to him, if one has broken the law, they will eventually be punished and there are no political cover-ups of criminal activities.
"Basing over the report I expect fast and effective measures for improving the collaboration between the competent institutions for clearing the pointed cases and solving the problems, which would evoke in the future", the head of Bulgarian state added.
Parvanov further stated that he has always been convicted of the need of strong measures, full transparency and control over political parties' financing and the election campaigns, especially when the head of state is concerned and that he, himself has been exactly the person to propose a reform in the political model.
