BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) commissioner for science and research, Janez Potocnik, on Tuesday congratulated the three laureates of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, all of whom are EU citizens.
"I am particularly happy and proud, that so far this year, three European researchers have been awarded the Nobel Prize," said Potocnik in a statement.
The laureates are German Professor Harald zur Hausen and French Professors Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier.
"These researchers, who have all benefited from EU funding in the past, are the human face of the excellence of our research, in particular in the life sciences. Promoting such scientific excellence is the objective of the European Union research policy," he said.
