Friday the 13th, a day considered by many as the day to stay in bed and wait for the next morning, is actually safer than an average Friday, according toastudyin Holland quoted by media reports Monday.

The study, publishedby the Dutch Center for Insurance Statistics (CVS), showed that fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur when the 13th of the month falls on a Friday than on other Fridays.

"I find it hard to believe that it is because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home, but statistically speaking, driving is a little bit safer on Friday 13th," said CVS statistician Alex Hoen.

Over the past two years, reports of traffic accidents are down from an average of 7,800 incidents on "normal" Fridays compared to 7,500 on Friday the 13ths.

There were also fewer incidents of fire and theft, although the average value of losses on Fridays 13th was slightly higher.

Some people firmly believe that Friday the 13th is a bad-luck day.

The number 13 has traditionally been considered unlucky -- something dating back to ancient times.

The day itself is also considered unfortunate -- dating back to the crucifixion on Good Friday.
