Hewlett-Packard will build a computer factory in Chongqing by 2010 to make desktop computers and laptops, Sina.com reported today.

HP signed a memorandum of understanding with Chongqing Municipality last night in Beijing.

It will be the company's second computer factory in China. The other is in Shanghai.

Chongqing Mayor Wang Hongju, Xi Guohua, deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's Personal Systems Group, and Fu Biaobang, chairman of HP China, attended the signing ceremony.

The Chongqing factory will cover 20,000 square meters and serve the unique needs of China's vast western regions. HP will target sales among governments, small and medium enterprises and individuals, according to the report.

At the same time, HP will establish a call center to provide pre-sale and after-sale service by 2011 and set up a network platform for 13 Chongqing universities to share resources online, Sina said.

HP already has two projects in Chongqing. The firm set up its HP Global Delivery China Center in 2005 and a Global Testing Service Center this past June.

HP's Shanghai factory makes desktop computers, personal stations and printers for the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and South Korea, according to the report.
