She received the degree from UM chancellor Sultan Azlan Shah ina special convocation at the university.
Queen Rania is the second recipient of the degree after Malaysia's former permanent representative to the United Nations Razali Ismail who received it in 2006.
The degree was in recognition of the contributions and commitment by Queen Rania who had played a key role in nurturing values of tolerance and acceptance of the global community by encouraging inter-cultural dialogues, UM vice-chancellor Rafiah Salim said.
"It is our intention to combine an academic award with an act of personal respect by affirming our commitment to help promote the values that both Her Majesty and this university stand for," Malaysian national news agency Bernama quoted her as saying.
Queen Rania, in her acceptance speech, thanked UM and Malaysia for the honor accorded to her.
"I might not be able to sing as well as Ayu (Norayu Damit, winner of the One in A Million reality program on television), but you all made me feel like One in A Million," she said with a smile.
After the ceremony, Queen Rania briefly met local and foreign students and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UM and University of Jordan.
To mark her visit to UM, Queen Rania planted a "keruing pipit" tree at the university compound.
Queen Rania and her husband, King Abdullah II, arrived in Malaysia on Thursday for a two-day visit.
