AMMAN, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Jordan will embark this month on a pollution study in industrial-heavy Zarqa River Basin, local dailyThe Jordan Times reported on Monday.

A joint team of local and international experts will identify areas not connected to sewage network and industries polluting the river, and determine where to insert new infrastructure and which wastewater pumping stations to be renovated, said Ministry of Environment Secretary General Fares Juneidi.

Funded by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the study is expected to be finished in six months, according to Juneidi.

Environment Ministry Spokesperson Isa Shboul said Jordan is considering establishing a water treatment plant close to the Zarqa River to treat industrial wastewater.

The severely polluted Zarqa River is located in Zarqa Governorate, which is home to 52 percent of Jordan's industrial plants and has a reputation for being one of the country's environmental black spots.
