Macedonia has asked NATO to accelerate its entry into the bloc to avoid the "negative implications" with its being left outside, news reaching here from Skopje reported on Tuesday.

Macedonia's Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki and Minister of Defense Zoran Konjanovski made the comment in a letter sent to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer a few days ago.

"The postponement of NATO membership invitation to Macedonia could have negative implications, not only for the overall situation in the country, but for the stability of the region as well," they said.

They pledged that Macedonia will continue to strengthen its participation in NATO-led and other international peace-keeping missions, and contribute to the efforts of the alliance to fight terrorism and other challenges and threats to the international peace and security.

In early April at a NATO summit in Romania, Macedonia's NATO membership was blocked by Greece over the 17-year-long name dispute between the two neighbors.

Athens has been opposed to its northern neighbor being called the "Republic of Macedonia," arguing it implies a territorial claim over a Greek northern province also called Macedonia.

Last month, Macedonia lodged a lawsuit against Greece at the International Court of Justice in the Hague for blocking its NATO entry.

"Macedonia remains strongly committed to finding a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue with Greece under the UN auspices. A solution that should let us fully integrate into the alliance in a dignified manner while preserving our national interests," Milososki and Konjanovski said in their letter to the NATO top official.
