McCain, who was also the Republican Party candidate of the U.S. elections held last month, said in a press conference at Zia International Airport before his departure to Bhutan that he appreciated the preparations by the caretaker government for the elections and hoped democracy will return to Bangladesh soon.
McCain said the joint efforts must be made by the parties to ensure the elections a success and hoped all the parties will respect the election result for the interest of the people and also for the good of the country.
McCain, with two other U.S. senators, came to Bangladesh Tuesday night from New Delhi for a brief visit to the country.
The 9th Bangladeshi parliamentary elections, which was postponed for nearly 2 years, will be held on Dec. 29, 2008.
