Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Friday, said the dispute over Iran's nuclear program should be resolved through diplomacy, the Kremlin press-service said.

"The Russian president reiterated his firm position in favor of settling the Iranian nuclear issue solely through political and diplomatic means," the statement said.

Medvedev also called on Iran "to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in order to clarify the remaining issues surrounding its nuclear program," it said.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and the European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana will meet in Swiss city of Geneva on Saturday to hold talks on the country's nuclear program.

Iran is currently under three sets of UN Security Council sanctions for defying demands to halt uranium enrichment, which it says it needs purely for electricity generation. It has denied accusations that it is trying to develop a nuclear weapon.
