Anew air-clean technology has been developed to combat 27 different kinds of harmful airborne substances, including bacteria, mould fungi, allergens and viruses like polio, H1N1 human flu, SARS and H5N1 avian flu.

Using a plasmacluster ion generator, positive (H) and negative (O2-) ions are generated from the natural water and oxygen molecules in the air. The ions can damage and disable proteins on the virus and nullify it.

Technology developer Japanese Sharp Co teamed up with Retroscreen Virology, a leading British virology research company for the project. It was released in Shanghai yesterday.

According to the researchers, high-concentration of plasmacluster ion can kill over 99.9 percent of H5N1 avian flu virus in 10 minutes.
The technology will be introduced at a world anti-bird flu congress in the United Kingdom on September 10.

Dr Robert Lambkin-Williams, managing director of Retroscreen Virology, said the world is on high alert for avian flu.

"Between 2003 and this June, the World Health Organization recognized 385 infections of human bird flu in the world with 243 deaths. All this occurred due to H5N1 virus infection," he said.

The technology can be introduced to household electrical appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators and air purifiers, as well as to automobiles and elevators.
