Nigerian federal government said Monday said it had no nuclear deal with Iran, the News Agency of Nigeria reported Tuesday.

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs Ojo Maduekwe disclosed this in Abuja while briefing newsmen after a meeting with a U.S. government delegation.

The minister was reacting to speculations that Nigeria might have signed a nuclear deal with Iran on Aug. 28 in Abuja.

The delegation included David Kramer, U.S. assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, and his deputy, Jeffery Krilla.

According to him, there is no agreement signed by the government with Iran on nuclear weapon, adding that Nigeria is a very responsible member of the international community and would always be so.

He said the Nigerian federal government showed that in the way she painfully handed over the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon.

"On the issue of nonproliferation of nuclear energy, we are absolutely in tandem with the international community," he said.

Maduekwe said nothing will make Nigeria support Iran on the issue, noting that if Iran is clearly breaking treaty obligations or is moving in a direction that is opposed to what the IAEA is insisting on, Nigeria will not support it.

He expressed the need for safe guards on nuclear energy, addingthat there ought to be transparency about it.

Maduekwe further explained that the country valued its relations with the U.S.
