Poland should not take Russian president Dmitry Medvedev's Tuesday statement about Poland's anti-missile shield as a threat, Russian ambassador in Poland Vladimir Grinin said Wednesday.

On Tuesday Medvedev told the Arab TV station Al-Jazeera that Russia's reply to the location of an U.S. anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic would be "of a military nature."

Grinin told reporters Wednesday that Russia found the shield in Poland was "harmful to its defense potential," but stressed that Russia was "no threat to Poland."

"Poland has nothing to fear from Russia," Polish news agency PAP quoted Grinin as saying.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski formally signed on Aug. 20 in Warsaw an agreement to deploy parts of the U.S. global missile shield in the East European country.

Russia objects the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security. Moscow has warned that it will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland.
