The Sabaragamuva (South Eastern) Province and the North Central Province (NCP) will go to polls on Aug. 23 to appoint members to the two councils for five-year terms.
K. P. P. Pathirana, the police superintendent at Anuradhapura, he capital of the NCP said that more security forces have already been deployed and additional measures such as more road blocks will be imposed.
The police would also ensure the strict following of election laws, Pathirana added. He stressed that unauthorized display of election material would not be allowed.
Upali Hewage, the chief police officer in the Sabaragamuva Province said strict security measures would be in place in the province.
Meanwhile, election watch groups and the police said 17 complaints of election-related violence have been recorded at Anuradhapura.
The two elections were called by the government ahead of the end of the respective terms of the two provincial councils. The elections were not due until 2009.
