Some 150 families living in a camp for internally displaced people in northern Sri Lanka's Vavuniya district were affected by a fire, officials said Thursday.

S. Shanmugam, district secretary or the chief government administrative officer at Vavuniya said that the fire broken out in the Poonthottam camp, about 254 km north of Colombo around 9 a.m. local time (0330 GMT).

"Two people aged 70 and 56 were injured and all the belongings of the people in the camp were destroyed. They were living in seven cottages," Shanmugam said.

The people were those displaced by fighting between the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the government troops.

Shanmugam said an electricity short circuit was being suspectedas the reason for the fire which was completely put out with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the police.
