Thailand's First Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Kanit Sapitak on Saturday reiterated that the military will not launch a coup since it is police's duties to monitor the situation when the protesters led by People's Alliancefor Democracy (PAD) will organize a mass rally on Sunday.

He was quoted by local news network The Nation as saying that the army is under the constitution and will act when ordered.

"The word 'coup' is not in our mind. We have duties to protect the country and to protect the border," he said.

He was speaking after assailants attacked anti-government protesters on Saturday early morning, killing one and injuring many others.

The PAD, which has seized the Government House since August 26,plans to hold a mass demonstration around the Parliament building on Sunday since the Parliament will open its annual joint meeting on the same day.
