TOKYO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks lost more than 1 percent on Thursday.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 159.22 points, or 1.13 percent, from Wednesday to 13,943.26.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 20.33 points, or 1.46 percent, to 1,372.95.
On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 846 to 744, with 131 others remaining unchanged.
Value leader Mizuho Financial Group fell 29,000 yen, or over 5 percent, to 525,000 yen.
Volume leader Nippon Steel dropped 13 yen, or over 2 percent, to 610 yen.
Trading volume on the main section came to 1,875.35 million shares, down from Wednesday's 2,119.08 million.
The TSE's Second Section index was up 1.30 points, or 0.04 percent, to 2,940.12 on a volume of 38.56 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term June Nikkei 225index futures contract was down 170 points to 13,950. ¡¡
