Tokyo stocks plunge

TOKYO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks plunged Wednesday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 280.55 points, or 2.11 percent, from Tuesday to close at 13,023.05.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 24.94 points, or 1.96 percent, to 1,246.48.

On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,432 to 211, with 62 others remaining unchanged.

Trading volume on the main section came to 1,931.44 million shares, down from Tuesday's 2,035.12 million.

Volume leader Urban, a condominium developer, shed 1 yen, or nearly 2 percent, to 62 yen.

Value leader Toyota Motor shed 60 yen, or over 1 percent, to 4,960 yen.

The TSE's Second Section index was down 23.76 points, or 0.90 percent, to 2,617.55 on a volume of 19.12 million shares.

On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract was down 270 points to 13,040.
